Crisis Connect

We developed an individual crisis support platform for the Women Who Code Hackathon for Social Good and received two awards

Crisis Connect was developed during the two-week Women Who Code Hackathon for Social Good — a global event with 60+ participants.

Our team, Women of the West Coast, was a top 20 finalist and received the 'Voter’s Choice' and 'Outstanding Social Impact' awards, highlighting our collaborative team of four — including web developers, a data scientist, and a UX designer.

OUR CHALLENGE & GOAL

Natural disasters are on the rise in BC

Global warming leads to severe weather events straining relief efforts in BC, with traditional government aid often delayed for affected individuals.

Our data scientist analyzed raw data to confirm the increasing trend of natural disasters, supporting our secondary research.

We aimed to develop an interactive platform for BC's natural disaster survivors, promoting real-time interaction, firsthand information sharing, and immediate access to personalized assistance, setting it apart from traditional relief programs.

PRIMARY AREA OF FOCUS

We aimed to prioritize essential needs

Crisis Connect serves both those seeking help and those willing to assist. It offers updates on natural disasters, recovery tips, and allows users to share their stories and seek aid — our primary user task flow.

It is similar to a GoFundMe, but instead focuses on disaster-specific assistance such as basic necessities (food, water, temporary housing, clothing, etc.).

We focused on connecting those affected with personalized support from the community instead of managing a relief fund. If individuals wish to contribute, they can donate to a relief fund through a non-profit by following a redirection to their website.

A GREAT TEAM EFFORT

Teaching Assistants and Teammates

Our team, made up of teaching assistants from different tech fields, came together to build on our cross-functional collaboration skills and to advance our learning and growth within the tech industry.

As team lead, I guided the process from whiteboarding to design, ensuring timely completion and emphasizing transparent communication. I also created the slide deck and led the virtual finalist presentation.

Our team's success was a testament to our strong communication skills, time management skills, and exceptional teamwork.
